Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson) is a rising star in professional bowling until becoming the dupe in a scheme hatched by his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray), which ends Roys budding career disastrously. Years later, the washed-up, has-been Roy finds a second chance as the unlikely mentor of an apparent Amish bowling phenom, Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid). The unorthodox pair appear to have a real shot at the big time until they encounter Claudia (Vanessa Angel), a strong-willed bombshell trying to escape her domineering and violent boyfriend. Claudia's personal problems drive a wedge between the bowlers and threaten to derail their only chance at success. The trio must find some way to work as a team despite their personality and culture clashes in order to win the bowling championship for the prize money that will solve their respective problems.
