Bill Harding (Bill Paxton) and Jo (Helen Hunt) used to be a tornado-hunting married couple. But being separated, Bill, now a TV weatherman, wants a divorce and has come down to Oklahoma, along with his girlfriend Mellissa (Jami Gertz), to get the divorce papers settled with Jo. He arrives at the onset of Dorothy, a tornado that is about to sweep across the plains of Oklahoma, and finds himself faced with the opportunity to chase it along with Jo and her team. The arrival of the tornado is seen as a much-awaited opportunity for Jo and Bill, to use the tornado detecting probe they had initiated together. The probe can help meteorologists predict a tornado, thereby increasing public warning-time. They have to compete with another corporate-funded team whose intentions are purely monetary, while Jo has put her entire career into developing and testing this warning system. The plot moves forward till Bill and Jo, battling the deadly tornado and its fury, finally get their probe into the eye of the tornado.
