Dean Youngblood (Rob Lowe) lacks the killer instinct necessary to survive in the big leagues of Hockey Playing. Although skilled, he must start out at the minor league team called the Hamilton Mustangs. There he is taken under the wing of veteran Derek Sutton (Patrick Swayze). Rival team Thunder Bay Bombers star player and thug Carl Rack (George J. Finn) confronts and seriously injures Sutton in a game. This causes Youngblood to rethink his decision to play hockey and he decides to quit. Once home, older brother Kelly (Jim Youngers), lays into Dean about being a quitter. Dean makes the choice to learn to fight on the ice. He returns to face the game and take revenge on Racki.
