Conor O'Neill (Keanu Reeves) is a loser with very little of value in his life apart from getting drunk and gambling on sports events. When he gets into a financial pinch and has to ask a friend for a loan to pay off his gambling debts, he gets more than he bargained for. Conor has to coach a little league team from an underprivileged Chicago housing project for a salary of $500 per week. As the season wears on Conor begins to get involved with his team and the players, especially when he meets Elizabeth Wilkes (Diane Lane), an attractive school teacher. Conor and his foul-mouthed Little Leaguers all learn and grow together.
