Historical narrative account about the rise, fall and rise again of porn magnate Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) and his battles with the federal government over obscenity and the First Amendment rights. Larry makes his rise to the top of the porn industry by being the editor of Hustler Magazine in Cincinnati. Accompanied by his erstwhile stripper girlfriend Althea (Courtney Love), Larry starts to be a success, a millionaire, and a celebrity in his own right. At the height of his fame, Larry runs afoul of the law when a satirical parody advertisement about the Rev. Jerry Falwell (Richard Paul) appears in his magazine. Hustler and Larry are sued by the Reverend, setting in motion the legal battle that will come to define the limits of free speech and pornography. With his young, whip-smart attorney Alan Issacman (Edward Norton), Larry appeals his obscenity case all the way to the Supreme Court eventually winning and establishing the precedent that pornography is protected by free speech. But while winning his legal battles, Larry loses his personal battles with drugs, with paralysis from being shot, and eventually with Althea.
