Norman Robberson (Chevy Chase) and his wife Helen (Dianne Wiest) are just your average every day husband and wife with children. When a known, and notorious, hitman moves in next door and the cops immediately begin to set up a stake out to figure out what he is up to. The cops send in tough detective Jake Stone (Jack Palance) to head up the operation, which they decide to set up in the Robbersons' home. The cops are trying to catch their man, and the Robbersons only want to help, unfortunately for both the help isn't that helpful. The situation quickly becomes whether or not the cops can outlast the antics of the Robbersons as they try to help them in their stake out.
