Dr. Eugene Sands (David Duchovny) was a famous surgeon but he got in trouble for taking drugs and then losing a patient. He remains addicted to heroin and is buying some in a bar. A man is shot after a fight in the bar; the doctor saves him with a beverage bottle that he fashions into a medical instrument. Claire (Angelina Jolie) notices this and Eugene gets an invitation to a home owned by a wealthy man named Raymond Bloom (Timothy Hutton). Raymond offers him a job taking care of friends with gunshot wounds so that hospital doctors would not start asking a lot of questions about how they got them.
