Sam Winters (James Caan) is the veteran coach at mythical Ivy League clone ESU, and the drama centers around recruiting high school football players and then turning them into big time college players. The Program is the football program, and will do almost anything to recruit stars. For potential All American tailback Darnell Jefferson (Omar Epps) a beautiful coed, Autumn Haley (Halle Berry) is used as a lure despite having a boyfriend, also a football player. They do have a rocky fling on campus. Many of the young players have demons, from cheating to steroid use to drugs, or in the case of Joe Kane (Craig Sheffield), self destructive behavior. Kane tries insane and potentially lethal stunts like playing chicken with a locomotive and lying on the highway. Coach Winters struggles with his own ethics and the pressure to have a winning team at any cost until the culmination in, of course, the Big Game.
