Frank Dux (Jean Claude Van Damme) is an American trained in Japanese martial arts from a young age by the father of another neighborhood boy. After the son of his master, Senzo Tanaka, is killed in an underground fighting tournament, the "Kumite", Dux undertakes an even more rigorous training program under Tanaka. His goal is to honor the memory of the fallen son and the Tanaka family name by participating in the Kumite himself. Travelling to Hong Kong where the Kumite is to be held, Dux meets up with another American competitor named Ray Jackson (Donald Gibb), and the two become fast friends. Led by a local guide, the two travel to the Kumite location and manage to gain entrance to the event. There, they encounter the dreaded Chong Li (Bolo Yeung), the previous victor and man responsible for the death of Senzo Tanaka's son. Chong Li is observed to be both dangerous and potentially unstable, but in order to win, someone will have to defeat him.
