Nick Styles (Denzel Washington) was just an ordinary policeman in Los Angeles until he was filmed for the news arresting Earl Talbot Blake (John Lithgow). Because of the high exposure and with the support of his good family, Styles goes on to complete law school and becomes the assistant district attorney for LA. He utilizes what propelled him into the spotlight to further advance his career: the media. But it is his constant presence in the media that fuels Blake in prison to get revenge. Seven years into his sentence, Blake escapes from prison during a parole board hearing by faking his own death. Nick's former police partner Larry Doyle (Kevin Pollak) is murdered by Blake and Nick gets framed for it. When Blake kidnaps Styles and futher's his revenge by threatening his family and shows how he has plans to frame him for all of Blake's crimes, Nick must escape and get help. Yet no one believes him since Blake is thought to be dead. Styles is now the criminal wanted by the police and the DA's office. So Styles resorts to calling on the help of a childhood friend Odessa (Ice-T) who is a gang leader to fight Blake as a criminal in order to save his family and his own life.
